How do heat pumps work?

Air source heat pumps capture heat from the air outside your home and use electricity to increase its temperature before transferring it indoors for heating and hot water. Because they move heat rather than generate it, they are highly efficient, typically producing around three units of heat for every unit of electricity used – making them up to 300% efficient. They can even operate effectively in temperatures as low as -20°C.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government initiative designed to help homeowners transition from fossil fuel heating to low-carbon alternatives. Eligible homeowners can receive a grant of up to £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump, making renewable heating more affordable than ever. The grant is applied directly through your installer, reducing the upfront cost of installation and helping households lower their carbon emissions while benefiting from a highly efficient heating system.

Is my home suitable for a heat pump?

Most homes are suitable for an air source heat pump, whether they're modern properties or older homes. Factors such as insulation levels, radiator sizes, and available outdoor space can influence system design, but a professional assessment will determine the best solution for your property. With the right design and installation, a heat pump can provide efficient, comfortable heating and hot water for a wide range of homes.

Common questions

Benefits of switching to renewable energy
Switching to renewable energy solutions like heat pumps and solar panels offers a range of long-term benefits for homeowners. These systems can significantly reduce energy bills, lower your carbon footprint, and improve your property’s value and energy efficiency. Modern renewable technologies also provide greater energy independence, helping reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels and shielding you from rising energy costs. By investing in sustainable energy, you’re creating a more efficient, future-ready home while contributing to a cleaner, greener future.
Do Heat Pumps make a lot of noise?
Modern Air Source Heat Pumps are designed to operate quietly and efficiently, making them well suited for residential properties. While the outdoor unit does produce some sound during operation, today’s systems are significantly quieter than older heating technologies. All heat pumps installed by EPC Improvements are MCS certified and selected to meet strict noise and performance standards. In most cases, the sound level is comparable to everyday background noise, allowing you to enjoy efficient, low-carbon heating without disruption to your home environment.
Will my Heat Pump work in colder temperatures during winter?
Yes — modern Air Source Heat Pumps are built to operate efficiently all year round, including during cold winter temperatures. Even in near-freezing conditions, heat pumps are able to extract heat from the outside air to provide reliable heating and hot water for your home. Today’s systems are specifically designed for the UK climate and continue to perform effectively throughout winter, helping keep your home warm, comfortable, and energy efficient whatever the weather. With a professionally installed system from EPC Improvements, you can enjoy dependable heating with lower carbon emissions and reduced energy usage.
Do Heat Pumps work with existing radiators, Solar Panels, and Underfloor heating?
Heat pumps are designed to work with a wide range of home heating systems, including radiators, underfloor heating, and solar panels. Underfloor heating pairs especially well with heat pumps, as it delivers consistent warmth efficiently at lower temperatures. Heat pumps can also work with existing radiators, although some homes may benefit from larger or upgraded radiators to achieve the best performance. For even greater efficiency, heat pumps can be combined with solar panels to help power your heating system using renewable electricity generated at home. This combination can reduce energy costs, improve overall efficiency, and create a more sustainable heating solution for your property.
Where does the Heat Pump get Installed?
Your heat pump will be installed outside your property, typically at the side or rear to maintain your home’s aesthetic appeal. It will be placed on a sturdy, level surface such as a concrete base to ensure stability and optimal performance. For efficiency and regulatory compliance, the heat pump must also have sufficient airflow and be located at least 1 metre away from any property boundary.
Do I need planning permission for a Heat Pump?
In many cases, installing an Air Source Heat Pump falls under permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, there are some exceptions — particularly for listed buildings, properties in conservation areas, or homes with specific installation restrictions. Requirements can also vary depending on the size, placement, and noise level of the system. For complete peace of mind, the EPC Improvements team can advise you on any permissions or regulations that may apply to your property before installation begins.
